Planning a car rental in Dakhla? This guide explains where to pick up your car, which vehicle suits your trip and what to check in the contract. You will also find practical tips for driving in wind and sand around the lagoon.
Dakhla sits on a narrow peninsula in southern Morocco, between the Atlantic Ocean and a wide lagoon. Kitesurf spots, desert viewpoints and quiet beaches are spread out along the coast, so a car rental in Dakhla gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. This guide covers where to pick up your car, which vehicle to choose, what to check in the contract and how to drive safely in wind and sand.
Renting a car in Dakhla usually starts with three simple decisions, made before you travel:
The easiest approach is to compare several professional agencies before you book. RentalMe is a Moroccan marketplace that connects renters with professional car rental agencies, so you can compare vehicles, rental conditions and agency information before choosing.
Dakhla is known for its lagoon, its kitesurfing spots and its desert landscapes by the sea. Many of the places visitors want to see are spread along the peninsula, and getting between them without your own vehicle can be inconvenient.
Typical reasons to hire a car in Dakhla:
Families, groups carrying kitesurf or windsurf gear and travelers who like to stop for photos all gain flexibility that taxis or fixed transfers cannot always offer.
Collecting your rental car at Dakhla Airport saves you from arranging a separate transfer into town. When you book, select the airport as your pick-up point and share your flight number and arrival time with the agency so they can plan the handover.
Advantages of airport pick-up:
Some agencies may apply extra fees for airport delivery or out-of-hours handovers. Check these conditions before confirming your reservation.
If you land in the evening, keep your first drive simple: go straight to your accommodation and leave longer excursions for daylight.
Dakhla has local independent agencies as well as larger rental companies. Local agencies can offer a personal service, but every agency has its own terms, so compare carefully.
| Criteria | What to check |
|---|---|
| Vehicle condition | Age of the car, tires, air conditioning |
| Mileage policy | Unlimited or capped kilometers |
| Fuel policy | Full-to-full, prepaid or other |
| Deposit | Amount, payment method and release conditions |
| Reviews | Feedback from previous renters |
| Contract language | Terms written in a language you understand |
Do not choose an agency on the lowest advertised price alone. Clear policies, a well-maintained vehicle and responsive customer service matter just as much. If you need extras such as a child seat or roof rack, request them when you book, as smaller agencies may have limited stock.
Car rental prices in Dakhla change with demand, so always check current rates before committing. The main factors are:
If your dates are flexible, compare several periods and agencies to see which combination suits your budget.
The right vehicle depends on the size of your group, the amount of luggage and gear, and the roads you plan to drive.
Small city cars suit solo travelers or couples staying on paved roads between the city, the airport and the main hotels. They are easy to park and usually the most affordable category.
Sedans and family cars offer more trunk space for suitcases and sports bags and more comfort on longer drives around the peninsula.
SUVs and 4x4s are worth considering if you plan to reach viewpoints or camps via rougher tracks, or if you carry bulky kitesurf equipment. Some agencies restrict driving off paved roads, so check the rental agreement before leaving the tarmac.
Whatever you choose, look beyond the price: air conditioning, luggage capacity and overall comfort matter on sunny, windy coastal drives.
Requirements differ from one agency to another, so always confirm them in the rental conditions before you book. Renters are generally asked for:
If you hold a foreign driving license, ask the agency in advance whether it is accepted as is or whether additional documents are needed. Age conditions, insurance options and deposit amounts are also set by each agency, so read them carefully before confirming.
Keep your booking confirmation, rental conditions and the agency's phone number saved on your phone for the day of pick-up.
A careful handover helps you avoid disputes when you return the car. Take a few minutes before driving away.
Inspect the car: walk around the vehicle and photograph or film every scratch, dent and stain. Check the trunk, the interior and the spare wheel, and ask the agent to note all existing damage in the contract.
Confirm in the contract:
Fuel policy: a "full-to-full" policy means you receive the car with a full tank and return it full. Other arrangements can be less transparent, so make sure you understand the policy before you sign.
Before leaving, ask the agent to show you the basics: lights, hazard lights, air conditioning, locking and where the spare wheel and jack are.
Dakhla is famous among kitesurfers for its wind, and blowing sand can affect driving conditions. Some access roads to viewpoints, camps or dunes may be unpaved or sandy.
Practical tips:
Fill up in town before longer drives, and check your fuel gauge before heading to a remote part of the lagoon for sunrise or sunset rather than after.
Route planning tips:
RentalMe is a Moroccan marketplace that connects renters with professional car rental agencies. Instead of calling agencies one by one, you choose your city, your dates and the vehicle that fits your trip, then compare vehicles, conditions and agency information before booking.
Is it better to rent a car at Dakhla Airport or in the city? Airport pick-up is more convenient if you want to drive straight to your hotel or camp. City pick-up may avoid an airport delivery fee at some agencies, but you will need a way to reach the office. Compare the total cost of both options.
What type of car is best for kitesurfers with gear? An SUV or a sedan with a large trunk works well, because boards, harnesses and wetsuits take up space. If your camp is reached by an unpaved track, a vehicle with higher ground clearance is a more comfortable choice, provided the agency allows that route.
When should I book my car rental in Dakhla? Booking ahead gives you more choice, especially during holidays and busy travel periods. If your dates are flexible, compare different weeks to find the best offer.
Can I rent a car in Dakhla with a foreign driving license? Many travelers do, but acceptance depends on each agency's conditions. Confirm with the agency before you pay whether your license is accepted or whether extra documents are required.
