A practical guide to car rental in Laayoune, from airport and city pick-ups to choosing the right vehicle. Learn what to check before booking online and how to drive safely across the Saharan south.
Sorting out car rental in Laayoune does not need to be complicated. Whether you arrive at Hassan I International Airport or pick up your hire car in the city centre, this guide covers how to plan a smooth trip — from choosing the right vehicle to driving across the Saharan south.
Car rental in Laayoune is mainly served by local and regional Moroccan rental agencies, many of which now accept online bookings. Rather than contacting each agency individually, you can use RentalMe — a Moroccan online marketplace where travellers compare offers from professional local car hire agencies and book online.
Here is how the search works in practice:
Enter "Laayoune" as your pick-up location and choose either the airport or the city centre.
Set your dates and times.
Filter by vehicle type, transmission, fuel preference and any other features you need.
Compare availability, conditions and prices across several agencies.
Reserve online and receive a booking confirmation.
This makes it far easier to weigh up your options without visiting multiple agency websites one by one. For broader Morocco car rental tips, the RentalMe blog is a useful resource.
If you are landing at Laayoune Hassan I International Airport and want a rental car ready on arrival, pre-booking online is your best bet. Many car rental agencies in Laayoune can arrange pick-up and drop-off at the airport — check on the listing whether the agency you choose offers it and under what conditions.
After landing, the process is typically:
Check your voucher or confirmation email for meeting instructions and the agency contact number.
Head to the arrivals area or the agreed meeting point outside the terminal.
Present your documents, complete the paperwork, and inspect the vehicle before driving away.
Selecting "Laayoune Airport" or airport pick-up in your RentalMe search helps display cars that can be collected straight after arrival. That saves you negotiating a taxi and lets you head directly towards the city, coastal spots such as Foum El Oued, or the port area at El Marsa.
Some travellers prefer collecting their rental car in Laayoune city centre rather than at the airport. This suits hotel guests arranging a car for day trips, residents booking weekend use, or business visitors meeting agencies at central branches.
When opting for a city pick-up:
Check the exact address and opening hours of the pick-up point given by the agency.
Allow time for paperwork and a proper vehicle inspection, especially during busy periods or local events.
Ask whether the agency can deliver the car to your hotel, and whether that service carries a charge.
If you are staying in Laayoune for a few days before you actually need a car, a later city pick-up avoids paying for rental days you will not use. If you want to return the car somewhere other than where you collected it, ask the agency in advance whether a one-way rental is possible and what conditions apply.
The right vehicle depends on where you plan to drive. Agencies in Laayoune list economy cars, family vehicles and SUVs, so there is usually something to suit your itinerary.
| Journey type | Recommended vehicle | Why |
|---|---|---|
| City driving, errands | Smaller car or compact hatchback | Easy parking, lower fuel use, nimble in traffic |
| Coastal routes (Foum El Oued), main roads | Saloon or family car | Comfortable ride, enough luggage space for a family |
| Desert tracks, remote Saharan landscapes | SUV or 4×4 | Higher clearance and better handling on loose surfaces |
An economy car is usually enough for city driving and main roads around Laayoune. If your trip goes beyond paved highways, an SUV or 4×4 is the safer choice for tracks outside the city limits.
Before confirming, think about luggage space, passenger numbers and air conditioning — temperatures in this region can be intense. If you are travelling as a larger group, people carriers, vans and minibuses are worth a look too.
Each agency sets its own conditions for renting a car in Laayoune, so the practical advice is to read the listing and the rental terms before you book. In general, plan to have ready:
A valid driving licence in the main driver's name, valid for the whole rental period.
An international driving permit if your licence is not in Latin script — some agencies ask for one, so carrying it avoids surprises.
Passport or national ID card, depending on whether you are a visitor or a Moroccan resident.
A payment card in the main driver's name, which agencies commonly use for a deposit or pre-authorisation.
Age conditions, deposit amounts and charges for an additional driver vary from one agency to another. Any additional driver normally has to be named in the contract. Check these points in the rental conditions before you confirm.
Cover is one of the things most worth reading carefully when you rent a car in Laayoune, especially if you will be driving long distances in the south. What is included, and what is offered as a paid extra, differs from one agency to another.
When you compare listings, look at:
What cover the quoted price already includes
Which optional extras the agency proposes, and at what cost
The excess or deductible you would be liable for
The exclusions — off-road damage, lost keys and fuel errors are common ones
If you already hold travel insurance, or cover through your bank card, check what applies in Morocco before you accept or decline extras at the counter.
Finding a good deal on car hire in Laayoune is mostly about comparing carefully rather than grabbing the lowest headline rate.
Here are practical steps:
Use a comparison marketplace. RentalMe lets you view different professional agencies, vehicles and conditions in one place.
Be flexible with location and timing. Switching between airport and city pick-up, or shifting your dates by a few hours, can change what is available.
Filter by essentials. Select only what you actually need — manual or automatic, air conditioning, fuel policy — then compare on price.
Check total cost, not just the daily rate. Look closely at the fuel policy, any mileage limit, and which extras are included.
Book ahead in busy periods. Reserving early gives you a wider choice of vehicles.
Booking with professional local agencies supports businesses in Laayoune while giving you choice and transparency.
A few careful checks before payment prevent most rental misunderstandings later.
Review these contract details before confirming:
Pick-up and return: dates, times, and the exact locations for both collection and return.
Mileage and fuel: is mileage unlimited or capped, and what is the fuel policy?
Cover and limits: what is included, and are there territorial restrictions on where the car may be driven?
Extras: GPS, child seats or an additional driver can often be requested when booking; agencies may charge for these at pick-up.
Route permissions: if you plan to leave the Laayoune region or drive on unpaved tracks, check whether the contract allows it.
Personal details: double-check the spelling of your name, your contact details, and your flight number for an airport pick-up, so the agency can reach you if your flight is delayed.
Cancellation terms also vary between agencies, so read them before you commit. Keep your confirmation accessible on your phone, or printed, when you collect the car.
Driving in Laayoune is manageable once you settle into the rhythm. The city has wide boulevards, roundabouts and a mix of local cars, taxis and pedestrians. Calm, attentive driving is the order of the day.
Paved roads link Laayoune with nearby beaches such as Foum El Oued and with the port area at El Marsa. Follow local signage and the agency's guidance on which roads suit your vehicle.
When heading further into the Saharan south, keep these points in mind:
Keep the tank well filled — service stations can be spread out between towns.
Carry water and basic supplies for longer drives.
Watch for sand drifting onto the road, which reduces visibility and grip.
Slow down near animals or pedestrians close to the carriageway.
Avoid driving when tired, especially on long, straight desert stretches.
The cultural landmarks and coastal scenery around Laayoune reward anyone willing to venture out. For more route ideas, browse the RentalMe blog.
Small habits at pick-up and drop-off make car hire in Laayoune much easier.
Walk around the car with the agent at pick-up. Check bodywork, lights, tyres and interior, and make sure any existing marks are recorded on the rental form.
Take clear photos or short videos of the vehicle at pick-up and at return, including the fuel gauge and the dashboard mileage.
Learn the basic controls before leaving the car park — headlights, air conditioning, spare wheel location, fuel flap — especially if the model is unfamiliar.
Return the car as agreed, at the arranged place, at the scheduled time and with the fuel level set out in the contract.
Keep the agency's contact numbers and your booking confirmation handy in case any question comes up during the trip.

Below are common questions from travellers about car hire in Laayoune and at Hassan I International Airport.
Do I need a car in Laayoune? A rental car is useful for airport transfers, day trips to Foum El Oued, travel to El Marsa, and exploring the wider Saharan region. Without one, taxis and limited public transport can restrict your itinerary.
Can I pick up my car at Laayoune Hassan I International Airport and drop it in the city centre? Some agencies allow a different pick-up and drop-off location, sometimes with a fee. Check this when searching on RentalMe so you can compare the agencies that offer it.
What kind of driving licence do I need? You will need a valid driving licence, and many international visitors also carry an international driving permit as a translation. Check the specific agency's requirements before you book.
Is insurance included? What is covered depends on the agency and the offer you choose, so read the insurance section of the rental terms carefully before confirming your reservation.
Can I drive outside Laayoune with a rental car? Driving to other Moroccan cities or further into the Saharan south may be allowed, but you must respect the agency's territorial limits. Confirm permitted routes in advance.
How do I find a good deal on car hire in Laayoune? Use the RentalMe filters to compare several agencies and focus on the total cost — fuel policy, mileage and extras — rather than the base daily rate alone. Being flexible with your pick-up location and dates helps too.
Can I cancel my booking? Cancellation conditions are set by each agency, so check the terms attached to the offer before you book.
