Planning a trip to M'Hamid El Ghizlane and the Erg Chigaga dunes? This guide explains where to pick up your rental car, which vehicle to choose and how to book it on RentalMe.
M'Hamid El Ghizlane is a small oasis town in southeastern Morocco, on the edge of the Sahara and the gateway to the Erg Chigaga dunes. Car rental for M'Hamid is the most practical way to travel there at your own pace, and this guide explains how to choose the right vehicle and book it with RentalMe.
RentalMe is a Moroccan marketplace that connects renters with professional car rental agencies. RentalMe is not a rental agency and does not own vehicles: it helps you find, compare and book offers from independent agencies in one place.
Budget: rental prices in Morocco generally range from 100 DH to 700 DH per day, depending on vehicle category, season and agency.
Public transport to M'Hamid is limited, so a rental car puts your schedule in your own hands. Most travelers do not pick up their car in M'Hamid itself but in a larger city on the way south:
Marrakech. Many international visitors land in Marrakech, which makes it a natural starting point. See our guide to car rental at Marrakech airport.
Ouarzazate or Zagora. If you are already in the south, picking up a car in Ouarzazate or Zagora shortens the drive to the final stretch toward M'Hamid.
On RentalMe, you choose your pickup city and dates, then compare the offers that partner agencies have available for your trip.
A rental vehicle turns a fixed itinerary into a self-directed journey:
Stops where you want. Pull over at ksars, palm groves and viewpoints along the Draa Valley instead of only passing through.
City and desert in one trip. Start in Marrakech, drive through Ouarzazate and Zagora, spend time near the dunes and return with the same vehicle, on your own timeline.
Room for luggage and gear. Photographers, families and groups with bulky equipment travel more comfortably in their own car.
Flexible day trips. Once based near M'Hamid, a car makes it easy to visit nearby villages such as Tagounite or Tamegroute.
Your choice depends on one question: are you staying on paved roads to M'Hamid village, or do you plan to drive on desert tracks yourself?
| Type | Best for |
|---|---|
| Economy or compact car | Solo travelers and couples staying on paved roads |
| Sedan | Long drives from Marrakech with more room for luggage |
| SUV / 4x4 | Tracks and rough terrain, if the agency allows it |
| Minivan | Families and small groups with lots of luggage |
Economy or compact car. A practical, budget-friendly choice if you stay on paved roads up to the village.
SUV and 4x4. Driving on sand and desert tracks calls for a real 4x4 and solid experience. Always check with the agency whether the vehicle may be used off paved roads.
Local 4x4 transfer. Many visitors leave their car in M'Hamid and join a local 4x4 driver who knows the tracks to reach a desert camp. This lets you rent a simpler car for the road section.
Choose your city and dates. Open RentalMe, enter your pickup city (Marrakech, Ouarzazate, Zagora or another location) and dates that cover your whole trip to M'Hamid and back.
Compare the offers. Look at the vehicles available from different agencies and check seats, luggage space and the type of car against your route.
Read the conditions. Before you confirm, read each agency's conditions carefully: insurance, deposit, mileage, fuel policy, cancellation and any restrictions on where the vehicle may be driven.
Keep your confirmation. Keep your booking details on your phone. If your arrival time changes, contact the agency to adjust the pickup.
After booking, the professional agency you chose handles the contract, vehicle handover and return directly.
The usual route runs from Marrakech across the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, then on to Ouarzazate, Agdz and Zagora before M'Hamid El Ghizlane.
Break up the drive. A relaxed itinerary spreads the journey over several days, with stops in Ouarzazate, Agdz or Zagora. Along the way, you can also visit Ait Ben Haddou.
Mountain roads. The Atlas pass includes bends and changes in altitude. Check road and weather conditions with your agency or local sources before you leave.
Navigation. Download offline maps before departure: mobile coverage can be weak in remote areas.
Daylight driving. Drive mostly during the day: the scenery is part of the trip and unfamiliar roads are easier to read.
Ksars and palm groves. The road between Zagora and M'Hamid passes earthen villages and oases that are especially beautiful in the morning light.
Village stops. Tagounite and Tamegroute are natural stops on a day trip from M'Hamid.
Fuel and water. Fill up whenever you pass through a larger town and carry water and snacks for the remote stretches.
Cash. Keep some small change for small shops and cafés along the road.
Insurance is one of the most important details to check before a long drive toward M'Hamid.
Read the conditions of each offer. Coverage, deposit and options vary from one agency to another: two cars at a similar daily price can come with very different conditions.
Off-road driving. If you plan to drive on tracks beyond M'Hamid, ask the agency beforehand whether the vehicle and insurance cover it.
In case of breakdown. Save the agency's contact number on your phone and ask what to do if you break down in a remote area.
Avoid surprises. Read the contract carefully, especially the rules on return time, fuel level and authorized routes.
Many visitors leave their rental car in M'Hamid while they head to a camp at Erg Chigaga with a local driver.
Arrange parking. Ask your guesthouse or desert camp organizer where you can leave the car during your nights in the dunes.
Remove valuables. Only take what you need for the camp and leave nothing visible in the car.
Note the location. Save your parking spot on your offline map.
Exterior. Check the tires (including the spare), lights and wipers. Photograph any existing scratches or dents and have them noted by the agency at pickup.
Interior. Check that the fuel level matches the contract and test the air conditioning.
Short test drive. Try the brakes and steering around the pickup area and report any problem before heading south.
Documents. Keep the rental contract and the agency's contact details within easy reach in the car.
A rental car makes it easy to link the Sahara with other regions: the Marrakech medina, the kasbahs around Ouarzazate, the Draa Valley or the Ourika Valley in the Atlas. If you want to return the car in another city, check whether the agency offers that option. For more ideas, browse the RentalMe blog.

Not to reach the village by paved road. To drive on desert tracks toward Erg Chigaga, you need a real 4x4 and solid experience, or you can use a local 4x4 driver.
Marrakech is a practical starting point if your trip begins there. Renting in Ouarzazate or Zagora saves driving time if you are already in the south. Compare offers available in each city on RentalMe.
It depends on the agency. Check the conditions of each offer before booking.
Requirements vary by agency. Read the conditions of the offer on RentalMe and contact the agency if you have any questions.
No. RentalMe does not own vehicles. It is a Moroccan marketplace that connects renters with professional rental agencies and helps you compare their offers across Morocco.
