Zagora sits in the Draa Valley on the edge of the desert and is one of Morocco's most atmospheric destinations. Booking a car rental in Zagora leaves you free to discover palm oases, kasbahs and desert villages at your own pace. This guide covers how to arrange a hire car for Zagora, which type to choose, and what to watch for at pick-up and on the road.
Car rental Zagora: quick answers to the main questions
Renting a car in Zagora is the flexible way to explore the Draa Valley, the desert fringe and remote oases. Arrange your hire car before you travel so you can set off as soon as you arrive. On RentalMe you compare offers from professional rental agencies in Morocco and book online.
With your own car you are not tied to organised tours or bus timetables, and it is far easier to reach the less touristy ksour, viewpoints and small oases.
- You set your own route and stop where you like: at a kasbah, a viewpoint or a palm grove.
- You compare several rental companies side by side on car and conditions.
- You filter on what matters to you: transmission, fuel, luggage space and air conditioning.
- Searching and booking happen entirely online.
- Availability varies by season, so searching early improves your chances of getting the car you want.
Why rent a car for Zagora and the Draa Valley?
Zagora is a gateway to the Draa Valley and the desert, with dozens of small villages strung along the palm oases. A hire car lets you travel at your own pace, without the fixed schedule of a group excursion.
Many travellers combine Zagora with a route through Marrakech, Ouarzazate and Aït Ben Haddou. Along the way you can stop at the kasbahs of Tamnougalt, the pottery of Tamegroute or the oasis near Agdz. The main roads between the larger towns are generally surfaced. Smaller roads towards desert camps or remote villages can be unpaved, and that partly determines which car you choose.
- Your own pace: stop whenever you want for photos, a glass of tea or a walk.
- Fuel stations are scarcer outside the towns and on long stretches, so plan your stops.
- For trips into the dunes you normally travel with a local driver or guide, especially on unmarked tracks.
- Genuine desert terrain calls for a proper off-road vehicle; an ordinary hire car does not belong there.
Where can you rent a car for Zagora? (Marrakech, Ouarzazate and locally)
Many travellers pick up their hire car in a larger city and drive from there to Zagora. Renting locally in or around Zagora is possible too, though the choice is smaller than in Casablanca or Marrakech.
- Marrakech: the widest choice. From Marrakech you cross the High Atlas to Ouarzazate and then head south to Zagora, a spectacular route through mountain passes and oases.
- Ouarzazate: if you would rather not navigate Marrakech city traffic, pick up in Ouarzazate, closer to the Draa Valley.
- Zagora itself: RentalMe also lists local agencies in the region, usually with a smaller range of models.
- If you want to drop the car off in another city, check whether the agency offers that and on what terms.
- Browse the RentalMe blog for more route inspiration in Morocco.
Which type of hire car should you choose in and around Zagora?
The right car depends on the season, the number of passengers and the roads you plan to drive. If you stick to surfaced main roads, a compact car is plenty; if you want to explore rougher roads, a higher vehicle serves you better.
- Compact city car: fine for two people driving mainly surfaced roads between towns.
- Larger saloon or estate: suited to families with plenty of luggage and long days on the road.
- SUV or crossover: the sensible choice if you regularly drive gravel roads or less well maintained routes around the Draa Valley.
- Air conditioning is no luxury in this region, particularly in the hot season.
- Think about automatic versus manual in advance: the mountain passes towards Ouarzazate reward comfortable gear changes.
- If you are considering an electric car, bear in mind that charging points are concentrated in the larger cities.
Car rental in Zagora: practical tips for pick-up, driving and parking
Driving towards Zagora is manageable for anyone used to European traffic. Extra attention is needed in villages, at checkpoints and on narrow roads.
Pick-up:
- Walk around the car with the agent at pick-up and have any existing damage noted on the form.
- Photograph the car before you leave and again when you return it.
- Ask which documents and which means of payment the agency requires, and whether a deposit is taken; this differs from one agency to another.
- Ask which fuel policy applies and at what fuel level the car must come back.
- Note down how to reach the agency while you are on the road.
Driving:
- Respect the posted speed limits; they change as you enter and leave villages.
- Expect checks along main roads and keep your documents to hand.
- In villages and in the Draa Valley you will meet pedestrians, animals and slow traffic, so drive carefully, especially at dusk.
- Avoid driving unfamiliar roads after dark.
Parking:
- In Zagora, use guarded car parks or the grounds of your riad or hotel where available.
- Mark your parking spot in your map app: street names are sometimes missing and older quarters are hard to read.
- Do not leave luggage visible in the car.
