Tafraoute, in the heart of the Anti-Atlas, is best discovered by car. Here is how to choose your vehicle, where to start and what to see between the Ammeln Valley, Aït Mansour and the painted rocks.
Tafraoute sits in the Anti-Atlas mountains of south-western Morocco, in a natural basin ringed by pink granite boulders. It rewards travellers who arrive with their own car, far from the busiest tourist circuits. This guide helps you plan your car rental in Tafraoute with clear expectations and no surprises.
Tafraoute is known for its pink granite, for the almond trees that blossom between late winter and early spring, and for the stone and earthen Berber villages of the Ammeln Valley, framed by towering rock walls. The Aït Mansour gorges, the famous painted rocks by Belgian artist Jean Vérame and the surrounding plateaus complete a set of places that public transport only partly reaches.
The rental offer directly in Tafraoute can be limited compared with big cities such as Agadir or Marrakech. That is why the most practical approach is often to pick up your vehicle in your arrival city and drive into the Anti-Atlas through constantly changing scenery. With a rental car you are free to stop at every viewpoint, visit villages off the classic routes and travel at your own pace.
RentalMe is a Moroccan marketplace that connects people looking for a vehicle (cars, motorbikes or utility vehicles) with professional rental agencies. It is not a single agency: it is a local platform designed to explore offers from several agencies in one place.
If you are travelling to the Anti-Atlas, you can start your search before you even leave home. Keep in mind that terms, inclusions and cancellation policies vary from one agency to another, so always read them carefully before confirming. To get started, visit the RentalMe website in English.
Agadir and Marrakech are the most common arrival points for travellers heading to southern Morocco. Agadir in particular is the natural gateway to the Anti-Atlas.
Two classic routes to Tafraoute:
From Agadir via Aït Baha: the road leaves the Souss plain and climbs gradually through the Anti-Atlas mountains to the pink granite basin.
From Tiznit via the Col du Kerdous: starting on the Atlantic coast, you climb up to the Kerdous pass before descending towards Tafraoute, with spectacular views.
The roads leading to Tafraoute are scenic and mountainous, and a rental car lets you stop at oases, viewpoints and rural markets along the way. Practical tip: plan your drives in daylight, especially on mountain sections, to drive more calmly and make the most of the light for photos.
The main roads to Tafraoute are paved, but many detours to Berber villages, gorges and plateaus include gravel sections and narrow lanes. Your choice of vehicle makes a big difference to how relaxed the trip feels.
City car: enough if you stay on the main roads and visit Tafraoute without heading onto secondary tracks. It is usually the easiest option to drive and park.
SUV or crossover: the most comfortable choice for exploring the Ammeln Valley, the Aït Mansour gorges and the surrounding plateaus, thanks to higher ground clearance and better handling on uneven surfaces.
Also think about passengers and luggage: if you are travelling as a family or carrying hiking and photography gear, cabin and boot space matter. Efficient air conditioning is a real advantage in the hot months.
Many agencies in Morocco ask for a security deposit when you pick up the vehicle, and accepted payment methods differ from one agency to another. Before confirming your booking, check carefully:
Accepted payment methods
Amount and form of the security deposit
Type of card required (credit, debit or other)
Any cover included in the price
If you do not have a traditional credit card, contact the agency in advance to clear up any questions. Keep a copy of the rental terms offline on your phone and carry a flexible payment method for small local expenses.
The time of year affects both your choice of car and your driving comfort.
Late winter and early spring: the favourite period for anyone who wants to see the almond trees in bloom in the Ammeln Valley. Days are usually mild, but nights can be cool. After rain some secondary tracks become more demanding, and an SUV gives you extra comfort.
Summer: the inland areas of the Anti-Atlas get very hot. A car with efficient air conditioning is almost essential, and it is best to set off early in the morning to avoid the hottest hours.
Autumn: a good season for exploring gorges and valleys, including Aït Mansour, with beautiful light for photography. Watch out for sudden storms that can swell the wadis and make some roads trickier.
Always check the local weather forecast before driving on secondary mountain roads, especially if you plan to go through narrow gorges or return after sunset.
Picture a typical day with your rental car: leave your hotel in Tafraoute, have breakfast in town, then head for the Ammeln Valley. The freedom to choose your stops is the real luxury of a road trip in this part of Morocco.
Ammeln Valley: earthen villages at the foot of pink granite walls, small almond and olive orchards, and viewpoints where sunset sets the rock aglow. From some villages, such as Oumesnat, walking trails lead up towards the plateaus.
Aït Mansour gorges: a scenic road leads to the gorges, where palm groves and vertical rock walls create a unique landscape. Some sections are narrow, so drive slowly and carefully.
Painted rocks: Jean Vérame's art installation is a short detour from Tafraoute. The last stretches may be on an unpaved track, so a car with good ground clearance makes the approach easier. The granite boulders painted blue, red and purple create a surreal contrast with the surrounding landscape.
Stop often for photos and breaks, but never block the road on narrow sections. Park only where it is clearly possible, and respect residents and the environment.
Anti-Atlas roads offer stunning scenery but require constant attention. Here is what to keep in mind.
Hairpins and lane width: hairpin bends are frequent and some roads are narrow and winding. You may share the road with trucks, local minibuses and animals: goats and sheep can appear suddenly.
Driving style: drive defensively, avoid risky overtaking and slow down near villages and on sections without side barriers.
Road checks: there may be checkpoints on regional roads. Keep your documents and rental contract within reach.
Fuel: fill up in the larger towns before tackling more isolated stretches, where service stations can be scarce.

Before you travel, ask the agency which documents are needed for the rental and check the official requirements for driving in Morocco. Insurance terms (cover, excess, deposit) vary from agency to agency: always read them before confirming. Keep a digital and, if possible, paper copy of the contract, together with the agency's contact details.
When you pick up the vehicle:
Check the exterior and interior: scratches, tyres, lights, mirrors.
Take detailed photos and report any issue straight away.
On return, go through the check again with the agency to avoid disputes.
When you plan a trip to areas like the Anti-Atlas, knowing in advance which vehicle is waiting for you makes all the difference. RentalMe lets you explore offers from several professional agencies in one place and look for the most suitable car: a city car for the main roads or an SUV for mountain tracks.
Starting from a city such as Agadir or Marrakech with a vehicle chosen in advance is often the most practical option for an Anti-Atlas road trip. For more tips on itineraries and getting around Morocco, read the RentalMe blog.
