Budget: rental prices generally range from 100 DH to 700 DH per day, depending on the vehicle category, the season and the agency.

Picking up your rental car at Tanger Med port

Tanger Med is a large passenger port connecting Morocco with Spain across the Strait of Gibraltar. For a smooth pick-up, agree on the following with the agency before your trip:

The exact meeting point at the port and how you will identify the agent or the agency.
Your ship's approximate arrival time. The actual time can vary, so let the agency know if anything changes.
Which documents and which deposit payment method the agency expects.

When you pick up the car, inspect it together with the staff member:

Bodywork: existing scratches or dents
Interior, tyres and lights
Fuel level and mileage
Air conditioning working

Take photos of any damage before you drive off and ask for it to be noted on the contract. This step protects you from misunderstandings at return.

Tanger Med, Tangier city or airport: where to pick up your car?

Three pick-up options come up again and again around Tangier. Each makes sense depending on your trip:

Tanger Med port: you avoid an extra transfer and drive straight from the port to your destination, whether Tangier, Tetouan or elsewhere in the north. Very practical for families and Moroccans living abroad traveling with lots of luggage.
Tangier city: makes sense if you spend your first night in the centre and prefer to pick up the car near your accommodation.
Tangier airport: useful if you combine ferry and plane on the same trip, for example to return the car before a flight home.

When comparing on RentalMe, pay close attention to each offer's pick-up and return location.

Which type of car to rent at Tanger Med

The best car depends on your plans and the number of passengers. The selection depends on each agency and your dates, but these are the usual categories:

Category	Ideal for	Advantage
City car / compact	Couples, solo travelers	Easy to park, economical
Sedan	Trips between cities	More space and comfort on the road
SUV	Routes mixing roads and mountains	Higher driving position
Family MPV	Families, groups, lots of luggage	Large boot and more seats
Luxury	Travelers looking for a premium experience	Comfort and equipment

If you need an automatic, check the transmission carefully when comparing. In summer, book early if you want an SUV or an MPV.

Read the conditions before you confirm

Conditions differ from one agency to another. Read them carefully before confirming your booking and pay particular attention to:

Fuel policy: the fuel level at which you must return the car.
Mileage: what each offer includes, which matters on long routes through northern Morocco.
Insurance and deposit: what the price includes, which optional cover exists and what the agency asks for.
Hand-over time: if your ship arrives very early, at night or on a public holiday, confirm the agency can hand over the car at that time.
Age and documents: ask the agency what it requires from the driver.

Keep the contract, your booking details and the agency's contact on your phone. That way you know where you stand and leave the port with peace of mind.

Road trip ideas when leaving Tanger Med by car

Leaving the port in your own car opens up plenty of options. A few ideas to inspire you:

Tangier city: the medina, the Kasbah and the seafront promenade overlooking the Strait. Preferably park outside the medina and walk the last stretch.
Around Tangier: Perdicaris Park and its trails among the pines, or the Caves of Hercules, open to the Atlantic.
Towards Tetouan and the Mediterranean coast: a good base for exploring the north, with coastal towns such as Fnideq. Find out more in our guide to car rental in Tetouan.
Towards the Rif: winding mountain roads up to the blue city; see our guide to car rental in Chefchaouen.

Practical tips for relaxed driving:

Drive defensively and watch out for motorbikes and pedestrians, especially in urban areas and around the port.
In the mountains, drive calmly and allow more time in bad weather or at night.
Always carry your driving licence, your ID and the car contract.

Returning the car at Tanger Med or in another city

Many travelers arrive via Tanger Med and return to the same port at the end of their trip, or finish somewhere else. The return matters as much as the pick-up:

Before booking, ask whether the agency allows you to return the car elsewhere and under what conditions.
Arrive with time to spare at the return point. If you return the car at Tanger Med before boarding, allow time for the car inspection and for getting to your ferry.
Check the interior: leave no personal belongings and make sure the fuel is at the agreed level.
Inspect the car together with the agency and keep any return receipt it gives you.
