Sania Ramel Airport or city centre: this guide explains how to rent a car in Tetouan step by step. Choosing a vehicle, what to check with the agency and road trip ideas to Chefchaouen, the Rif and the coast.
Arranging a car rental in Tetouan doesn't have to be complicated. This guide brings together the practical information you need to choose your pick-up point, the right type of vehicle and the conditions to check with the agency, whether you land at the airport or prefer to collect your car in the city centre.
There are two main pick-up options when you rent a car in Tetouan: Tetouan Sania Ramel Airport and the city centre. The right choice depends on your travel plans and on what each agency offers.
RentalMe is the Moroccan marketplace that connects people looking for a vehicle with professional rental agencies. Depending on the agency, you will find anything from city cars and compacts to SUVs and vans.
Prices vary with the season, the vehicle category and the agency. If you travel in high season (summer, long weekends or school holidays), book ahead: availability can be more limited.
Before confirming any booking, always check the insurance, excess, mileage and fuel policy with the agency. The final contract is signed with the agency.
Tetouan Sania Ramel Airport is the most direct gateway to the city if you arrive by plane. Depending on the agency, the car may be handed over at a desk in the terminal or at an agreed meeting point.
The usual pick-up process looks like this:
Some agencies let you pick up the car at Sania Ramel and return it in the city, or the other way round. Confirm this option and any extra charges directly with the agency. Also let them know if your flight arrives late or is delayed.
Airport pick-up is convenient if you want to head straight for the Mediterranean coast or Chefchaouen as soon as you land.
| Criteria | Sania Ramel Airport | Tetouan city centre |
|---|---|---|
| Convenience on arrival | Car available when you land | Taxi or transfer needed first |
| Heading out straight away | Practical (coast, Rif, Chefchaouen) | Less practical |
| First day spent in the city | You pay for a day without using the car | Pick up the car when you need it |
| Extra charges or conditions | Confirm with the agency | Confirm with the agency |
If you plan to spend your first day exploring the medina or resting at your accommodation, it can make more sense to collect the car the next day in the city centre. The journey between the airport and the city can be made by taxi or transfer.
If you plan to drive in the centre, a small car makes it easier to get around and park in narrow streets.
The right category depends on your trip: city sightseeing, visiting family, business or driving through the Rif mountains.
City or economy car. Practical for getting around Tetouan and for short trips.
Compact or saloon. More room for passengers and luggage, useful for couples and small families.
SUV. A higher driving position, worth considering if you plan mountain excursions or carry a lot of luggage.
Van. Designed for groups and large families who need extra space.
Always choose a vehicle that matches the number of passengers and the amount of luggage, and compare the total budget: rental, fuel, insurance and extras.

These are the points to check with the agency before signing the contract:
Before going to the agency, have ready:
Minimum age, how long you must have held your licence and any young-driver surcharges vary from one agency to another: confirm them before booking. Read the contract carefully and ask about anything that is unclear.
Tetouan is a great starting point for discovering very varied landscapes at your own pace.
Tetouan medina. Before hitting the road, spend a few hours walking through the medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Mediterranean coast. A car lets you explore beaches and coastal villages, stopping wherever you like.
Chefchaouen and the Rif. Chefchaouen is one of the most photographed places in Morocco. By car you can stop at viewpoints and Rif villages at your own pace.
Tangier. Combining Tetouan and Tangier in one trip is common and shows you another side of northern Morocco.
Plan your stages in advance and check with your agency whether the contract includes any geographical restrictions.

Is it better to pick up the car at Tetouan Sania Ramel Airport or in the centre? It depends on your plans. If you want to head straight for the coast or Chefchaouen, the airport is more convenient. If your first day is in the city, you can collect the car later in town.
Can I rent a car with unlimited mileage? It depends on the agency and the offer. Confirm the mileage conditions before booking.
What should I do if my flight is delayed? Let the agency know as soon as possible. Before booking, ask how they handle delays.
Can I add extras such as a child seat or an additional driver? It depends on the agency. Request these extras when booking and confirm their price and availability.
What documents do I need to rent a car in Tetouan? Usually a valid driving licence, an ID card or passport and a means of payment for the deposit. Confirm the exact requirements with the agency.
How does returning the car work? Arrive at the agreed return point with time to spare. The agency will check the condition of the vehicle and the fuel level. Keep the return document.
