Safi is one of Morocco's most rewarding Atlantic coast stops, and a car is the best way to see it. This guide covers where to pick one up, which vehicle suits your trip, and what to check at pickup and drop-off.
Safi is one of Morocco's most rewarding Atlantic coast stops, and having your own wheels is the smartest way to experience it. This guide covers what you need to know about car rental in Safi, from choosing the right vehicle type to booking, pickup and making the most of your trip.
A car rental in Safi gives you a freedom that taxis and intercity buses simply cannot match. Safi is an Atlantic port city defined by ocean cliffs, surf spots, a working fishing harbour and the hillside pottery quarter above the medina, where artisans still shape and fire clay in the traditional way. Moving between the medina, the old fortress area, the ceramics museum and scattered coastal viewpoints in one flexible day is far easier when you have your own car in Safi.
Beyond the city centre, the beaches north and south of Safi are thinly served by public transport. A rental car lets you stop wherever the coast surprises you: a hidden cove, a surf break, a seafood stop by the port at dawn. Safi has no commercial airport, so visitors often pick up a car in a larger city and drive in, which makes an online rental marketplace genuinely useful. RentalMe lets you browse and compare vehicles from professional local agencies in one place, then book online.
Because Safi has no commercial airport, most travellers arrive overland from Marrakech, Casablanca, Essaouira or El Jadida, and that shapes where you collect your vehicle. Some travellers prefer to pick up in Safi itself, close to the centre or their accommodation; others collect a car on arrival in a larger city and drive to the coast.
A common approach is to collect your car after your flight, spend a few days in Safi, then continue along the Atlantic. Travellers already based on the coast can pick up in Essaouira or El Jadida and drive to Safi from there. On RentalMe, each listing shows the pickup point proposed by the agency, so you can decide where to start before you book, and contact the agency directly if you need to confirm a detail.
The right car depends on your group size, your luggage and how adventurous your plan is. A compact or economy car is the most practical choice for city driving and paved coastal routes: it is easy to park around the medina and cheap to run on short hops to the beach and nearby viewpoints.
For longer drives between the inland cities and the coast, a mid-size sedan offers a better balance of comfort and boot space for a family with road-trip luggage. An SUV or crossover is the better call if you plan to explore rougher coastal tracks or carry bulkier items such as surfboards or photography gear.
Families travelling together often look for a van or people carrier for the extra space, which is also handy if you plan to bring home pottery from the ceramic quarter. On RentalMe you can compare the vehicles professional agencies list in and around Safi, review each vehicle's details and photos, and match them to your travel style. If you are curious about renting an electric vehicle, check whether charging along your planned route supports it.
Conditions and availability shift with the season and demand, so comparing offers in one place saves time. Search for Safi on RentalMe, filter for the vehicle type you want, and compare the listings side by side rather than contacting agencies one at a time.
Read the vehicle description and the rental conditions carefully for each listing. Mileage conditions, fuel policy, included extras and payment terms are set by each agency, and they matter just as much as the headline rate when you work out what a rental will really cost you. If you are planning a longer stay, it is worth asking agencies directly about longer rental periods before you book.
Fuel and mileage terms vary between agencies in Safi. A "full to full" policy, where you collect the car with a full tank and return it full, is the simplest to reason about. Note the fuel level at pickup, keep your receipts, and return the car as your contract specifies.
Some rentals come with unlimited mileage, while others set an allowance with a charge beyond it. If you are planning a long coastal loop, check whether the allowance covers your route. Other conditions worth reading closely include pickup and drop-off times, late-return rules, and any restriction on unpaved roads.
Insurance terms are set by each agency and are worth reading before you sign anything. Make sure you understand what your contract covers, what it excludes and what you would be responsible for, and ask the agency directly if anything is unclear.
Safi's layout — coastal cliffs, an old medina above the port, and modern neighbourhoods spreading inland — makes a car genuinely useful for moving between districts without waiting for transport. Stick to the main roads between Safi and neighbouring cities, and expect traffic to slow near towns and villages, where pedestrians, roadside activity and the occasional animal are all part of the picture.
For parking, look for guarded or clearly marked areas near the medina entrance, the fortress and the beaches. Keep valuables out of sight and photograph where you left the car. On scenic stretches of coast, drive at a relaxed pace and stop whenever a viewpoint or a quiet beach catches your eye — those moments are exactly why you have your own wheels. Keep water and snacks in the car, top up fuel before heading into quieter stretches, and download offline maps for areas with a weaker signal.
With a rental car, Safi becomes a launching pad for some of Morocco's best Atlantic drives.
A coastal loop north of Safi, past cliff viewpoints, fishing spots and uncrowded beaches.
A southbound drive towards Essaouira, combining morning pottery shopping with an afternoon in its medina and harbour.
A relaxed weekend pairing Safi with the Oualidia lagoon or historic El Jadida, with seafood stops and ocean views along the way.
An inland-to-coast loop for travellers who fly into a larger city and want a quieter base by the ocean.

The search happens online. Look for Safi, filter by car type and features, compare offers side by side, then open a listing to review the full details, the photos and the agency's own conditions.
Each vehicle on RentalMe is listed by a professional rental agency rather than an informal private owner. If you need to confirm something specific before you commit — a particular pickup arrangement, a drop-off detail, or extra equipment — you can get in touch through RentalMe and settle it with the agency first.
A quick routine at both ends protects everyone and keeps the experience smooth.
At pickup:
Walk around the vehicle with the agent and inspect it for existing damage before driving away
Photograph scratches, dents, tyre condition, mirrors, lights and the windscreen
Confirm the fuel level and fuel type match the contract
Test lights, wipers, air conditioning and the parking brake
Set your first destination in navigation before pulling into traffic
Make sure anything you spot is recorded by the agency before you leave, and keep a copy of the signed contract.
At drop-off:
Arrive a little before the agreed time
Refuel according to the fuel policy in your contract
Remove all personal items and do a final joint inspection with the agency
Keep your photos and a digital copy of the rental contract until well after your trip has ended.
If Safi is one leg of a longer Moroccan itinerary, the RentalMe blog has destination guides covering the Atlantic coast and beyond. Bookmark the useful ones on your phone so you can revisit them while travelling. Renting a car in Safi is one of the best ways to connect pottery workshops, surf beaches and historic towns into a single coherent journey, and booking ahead gives you the widest choice.
These are the practical questions travellers ask most often before booking. The answers are general and do not replace reading the specific conditions of the agency you choose on RentalMe.
If you want to move between the medina, the pottery quarter, the fortress and the beaches in a single day, or you are staying outside the centre, a small car is very practical. If you plan to stay mostly on foot inside the old medina, taxis can work, but a car becomes far more useful as soon as beach days or coastal excursions enter the plan.
Some agencies allow a different drop-off location, and some do not. Check the conditions on the listing you are interested in, and contact the agency through RentalMe before booking if a specific one-way route is essential to your plan.
A compact or mid-size car is a good balance of comfort and economy for paved coastal roads. An SUV gives you more space and more confidence on rougher tracks to viewpoints. Solo travellers and couples who stay mainly in towns and on main beaches usually find an economy car easier to park and cheaper to run.
Booking ahead is a good idea in the busier travel seasons and around local festivals, simply because the choice of vehicles is wider. Once your travel dates and accommodation are settled, it is worth securing the car.
Inspect the exterior and interior for damage, verify the fuel level, test the lights and wipers, and make sure any marks you find are recorded by the agency. Take clear photos or a short video before you drive away and keep them until after you have returned the vehicle. Storing a digital copy of your contract on your phone makes it easy to re-check the conditions while you travel.
